`Anu Week' celebrations at VIT University

It will be held from February 13 to 17

VELLORE: The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Mumbai, is conducting its annual regional event, "Anu Week Celebrations-2007" at the VIT University here from February 13 to 17.

According to a press release from J. Daniel Chellappa, Engineer-in-Charge, Technical Coordination and Public Awareness Cell, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Chennai, the basic objective of the event was to make the participants read, understand and appreciate the Indian nuclear programme, to kindle the interest of students in basic science and improve the quality of science education in schools. The event was open to the students and teachers from schools, colleges and universities in and around Vellore. The theme-based celebrations include quiz, essay, cartoon and elocution competitions, two-day workshop for teachers and a participatory exhibition.

The topics are: "Nuclear Energy — Powering the Sustainable Development of India" for the workshop, "Fast Reactors for India's Energy Security" for the essay contest, "Atoms for Societal Development" for the cartoon competition, "Atoms for Peace and Prosperity" for the quiz and "Contribution of Nuclear Energy to India's Development" for the elocution contest.

The participants would have the privilege of directly interacting with the leading scientists and experts of the DAE from Mumbai, Chennai and Kalpakkam. Prizes worth Rs.60,000 would be available for motivating winning students and teachers.

There would be no registration fee. The essay and cartoon contests would be held at the VIT University on February 3.
