Promote Telugu

Promote Telugu

The news that Telugu medium instruction will be discontinued in 100 Gurukulam schools in the State and the introduction of teaching of English from the I standard in schools makes bad reading for lovers of Telugu language. When serious efforts are being made by both public and private organisations for recognition of Telugu as a classical language by the Government, this retrograde step is indeed a blow to the movement. Our politicians and literary men should ponder over this, seriously and save Telugu from its own people.

Sai Baba's comments

Violence was witnessed in several parts of Telangana region following the remarks made by the spiritual leader Satya Sai Baba over the separation of the State. His comments convey a broad message to every one that in the name of the separation of the State the vote-chasing politicians will divide and break the hearts of the Telugu-speaking people and only unity will bring prosperity and eradicate backwardness. But, it is very unfortunate that some politicians passed scathing remarks against the godman.

India is a land of prophets, philosophers, poets, sadhus and babas. Their messages have a big impact on our society. Politicians should not react over their comments. We are living in a democratic country where there is freedom of expression. In fact, the Baba is in social service for the past several decades providing education, health facilities and drinking water supply to rural and urban areas of Anantapur district. The way he is doing service to the destitutes is laudable. However, there is nothing wrong in his comments and politicians should stop giving colour to them.

De-silting tanks

Our age-old tanks and their feeding canals have fallen into total disuse resulting in massive silt and sand. While sand is continuously exploited for construction purposes, silt remains unutilised and unexploited. The tanks where natural rainwater is stored are not in a state to receive water from their feeding canals, resulting in dried-up tanks and the ravages of water scarcity are seen everywhere despite good rains in monsoons.

De-silting operations should be taken up on a war footing and the feeding canals should be cleared by unauthorised constructions and encroachments. Urban areas are facing severe problems of water scarcity and similarly rural areas are facing dried-up tanks and associated evils of water famine.

The Government should take up de-silting operations on our age-old tanks and their feeding canals immediately.

Laudable move

This refers to the news item `Placing students on write track' ( The Hindu , Jan. 23) to mark World Handwriting Week'. The graphologist and neuro-linguistic programmer of Tirupati, S.V. Bhaskara Raju's efforts in conducting camps on good handwriting are laudable. Some students, despite their intelligence, lose 10 to 15 marks due to bad handwriting.

In my experience, good handwriting, which can improve the drawing skills too, can be achieved within a few weeks by practising the shape of letters, be it English or Telugu. Thanks to computers and mobile phones, etc. letter writing and other communicative methods through handwriting are almost ignored. Bad handwriting, the culprit among students, creates problems not only in writing academic examinations but also descriptive papers in competitive examinations and so on. The report rightly stated that good handwriting projects motivation, honesty, attitude, self-esteem etc.

The Government should come forward to take steps and encourage people like Mr. Raju to improve good handwriting among students in the State.
