Bangalore: The Stem Cell Research Forum of India (SCRFI), a society formed to bring together biological and medical scientists with common interest in the field of stem cell research and to promote scientific research in stem cell biology, will hold its first annual meeting and international conference here from Monday. The conference will provide a platform for leaders in stem cell research, biotechnology and pharma industries to share their views on one platform. The SCRFI initiative, wherein over 350 leading stem cell scientists from India and abroad are expected to participate, will look to develop a multi-disciplinary network in these fields. The conference is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology and the Manipal Group and M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology of the Union Government, will inaugurate the meet. Satish Totey, Director of Manipal institute of Regenerative Medicine and Secretary of SCRFI, said, "Medicine today is moving rapidly toward the development of more effective cures for a host of diseases. In the past, doctors could usually only treat the symptoms of illness treatments rarely addressed the causes of disease. Today, many of the cures being developed by scientists are based on advanced techniques that are able to target the causes of disease rather than simply treating the symptoms and stem cell research was gaining importance."
