Voters' ID cards issue This is with reference to the news item "Final list by July next" (The Hindu, 11-12-06) wherein the Chief Election Commissioner has expressed his hope that the process of preparation of electoral rolls would be over by March 2007. Photographs of the voters were taken at the corporation office of Jafferkhanpet, Chennai-83 (Zone No. 9 division 131) some eight to 10 years back for issue of identity cards. But I.D. cards have not been issued to us so far. When the corporation officials started taking photos in last March, prior to the Assembly elections for issue of I.D. cards we approached them for taking photos. But we were informed that as per their records I.D. cards had already been issued to us and hence no fresh photos would be taken for this purpose. In the above circumstances can we expect the authorities concerned to do the needful to take fresh photographs and issue I.D. cards to us before the targeted period. T. S. Kalyanaraman, Chennai-83 Civic works in Jeeva Nagar The residents of Jeeva Nagar, a CMDA-approved layout in Kattupakkam just off the fast developing Mount-Poonamallee Road (PPD LO No. 134/2003 and Survey Nos. 558/2B2, 559/2, 561/2 and 562 of Mangadu Village) are awaiting civic works to be undertaken, to overcome problems of severe monsoon flooding, lack of basic roads and street lighting. The Mangadu Panchayat, which has jurisdiction over the layout, has said that it is considering these development works, and tenders are being processed, which is a commendable step. We would like to point out that optimal utilisation of the allocation can take place only if the road level in the layout is raised through addition of debris (which is readily available from nearby encroachment demolition work carried out by official agencies in December 2006). This would bring the Jeeva Nagar ground level on par with adjoining Badrimedu ward and AUDCO Nagar. During 2005 and 2006, Jeeva Nagar remained inaccessible for nearly four months because of flooding, release of sewage from adjacent wards, lack of roads and total darkness at dusk. As a result, house-building activity came to a halt and the panchayat suffered revenue loss. While thanking the Kancheepuram District Collector and the Mangadu Panchayat for their initiative, we appeal that they make the best use of funds by ensuring at least four feet road height, and provision for laying of drinking water pipelines along all interior streets. S. Ramkumar, President Jeeva Nagar Owner's And Residents Welfare Association Kattupakkam. Anna Nagar West Extn. Post Office I had the unfortunate experience of visiting Anna Nagar West Extension Post Office located in the TNHB Complex, SBOA School Road, on the 27th December 2006. There is an open Public Toilet with the TNHB Complex at the entrance to the Post Office located on the I Floor. The stench is unbearable even as you approach the staircase and permeates the air, making it difficult for one to breathe! The Staff of the Post Office have to put up with this avoidable, unnecessary and obnoxious stench, throughout the day, and repeated requests and appeals to higher authorities have not yielded any results. Surely the P&T authorities and the TNHB Officials cannot allow such a situation to prevail at a public place like a Post Office where hundreds of people old and young alike visit each day. The Post Office should also be shifted to a Ground Floor premises to facilitate old and sick people, senior citizens avoid climbing up and down. C. P. Nataraj, Chennai-17 Bus stop can be retained MTC bus stop opposite to Kamala Theatre has been shifted to Vadapalani temple. While this is a welcome move for those who visit the temple, people wanting to go to Vijaya Hospital, Vijaya Sesh Mahal and nearby shopping complex find it difficult to come all the way from Vadapalani Temple bus stop by crossing over the 100 ft. Road signal. Either they prefer to board or alight the bus at the signal, even from the moving vehicle, which is risky. I request MTC authorities to consider retaining the Kamala Theatre bus stop. I once again thank the authorities for installing a bus stop at Vadapalani temple. R. Ranganathan, Virugambakkam Restore withdrawn bus services This refers to the news item in The Hindu dated January 11, 2007 titled `New MTC services begin'. While introduction of new services is appreciated it is upsetting to note that one by one all the services that were operated from Elango Nagar - Officers' Colony bus terminus in Annanagar Western Extension have been withdrawn. Instead a few services operating from JJ Nagar are diverted via Elango Nagar. By the time the buses reach Elango Nagar, they are almost full and the senior citizens and ladies are unable to board the buses. The next stop (Collector Nagar) is always over crowded. The services withdrawn from this terminus are now run as cut services from Shenoy Nagar throughout the day and one can find only the driver and the conductor travelling in those buses. The residents of TVS Colony, Officers' Colony, Murty Nagar, Devar Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Jeevan Bhima Nagar would like all the services withdrawn from this terminus to be reintroduced immediately to enable the passengers to travel safely. Several representations in this regard to the highest authorities of the MTC have not yielded any positive result. The local MLA B.Ranganathan also visited the terminus a month ago and heard the woes of the public and promised suitable action, which is yet to be taken. Will the Transport Minister look into the problem? V.Rajagopal Annanagar Western Extn.
