MYSORE: A delegation of farmers' representatives met Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Mysore on Sunday and submitted a memorandum seeking a direction to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) to stall the land acquisition process around Mysore. The farmers are up in arms against the KIADB's decision to acquire "7,000 acres of fertile land" in Mysore, Nanjangud and Srirangapatna taluks to facilitate setting up of industries. The farmers, whose land has been notified for acquisition, have formed the Bhoomi Thayi Horata Samithi under the patronage of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) to prevent the takeover of their lands. The Chief Minister received the memorandum and promised the farmers that he would shortly convene a meeting to discuss the matter. In the memorandum, the samithi contended that the KIADB had issued a notification for acquisition of 7,000 acres of land, which had been irrigated by the Government at a cost of several crores of rupees. "Irrigation facilities have been provided to these lands from Cauvery, Kapila and Varuna projects. Besides, the farmers have invested their money and sweat to make these lands agriculturally productive," said the memorandum. "If these lands are acquired, then lakhs of families will be thrown to the streets," said the samithi.
