Fire safety norms Recently, the Department of Fire Services issued notices to Residents Welfare Associations of the twin cities warning that apartments would be demolished if fire safety norms are not adhered to. It is unfortunate that the residents are made scapegoats. How did MCH Town Planning officials accord permission to the flats built long ago by powerful builders? Who is to be held responsible? Welfare associations should not be taken to task for no fault of theirs. I hope notices are issued to those builders, who have failed to follow the rules and regulations of MCH Act. R. Mallesh Gowd, Vanasthalipuram Illegal constructions Apropos the news item `Court's strict orders on illegal constructions' ( The Hindu dated 30.10.2006) as also `Fire services dept. to penalise erring builders' ( The Hindu dated 10.11.2006). The gross setback violations are already in the know of the MCH authorities. It is, therefore, hoped that the MCH in strict compliance of court order would take such steps other than regularising illegal constructions. N. Srikrishna, Malkajgiri Help the handicapped During my visit to one of the parks near my area, I happened to see a physically challenged man, who could barely walk, enquiring whether a wheelchair was available to enable him to go around the park. But he was told that such a facility was not available. The unfortunate man had to go back with great disappointment. The MCH is, therefore, requested to take immediate action to provide this facility. G. Jayaraman, Sundernagar Watch out The Clock Tower is an important landmark in Secunderabad. It does not function at times. Recently, it stopped working. Do MCH authorities concerned notice this? The time for those 3 days stood at 11.50. It is high time officials keep a watch on it and take up repairs so that the clock doesn't stop functioning. Ch. Sarath, Secunderabad Bus stop There used to be a bus stop at Women's College near Gandhi Gyan Mandir, Koti, for buses coming from Chaderghat. This was very convenient for those around Esamia Bazar, Nimboliadda, Kutbiguda and Chappal Bazar to go towards Nampally and beyond. This was, however, removed on account of the traffic generated by the presence of bookstalls adjoining Women's College boundary wall. These bookstalls have been removed now. It would be good on the part of concerned authorities if they restore the bus stop. S. Vidyadhar, Esamia Bazar Postal box Residents of Sanathnagar colony have represented to install new post boxes at the centrally located places. The existing boxes are not catering to the needs of the residents as they are not sufficient. To cite, the post box at Swamy Talkies function hall has been removed. Thereby the residents of that locality have to go a few furlongs to post a letter. Similarly, no post box was installed nearer to Sanathnagar labour welfare centre. A number of representations have been made to the postal authorities by the local residents to install post boxes at these places. Kindly arrange to provide the boxes at these two places. Hanumanth Rao, Sanathnagar Burglary cases Not a day passes without reading the news of burglary in and around the city. Even the legislators and high officials are keeping mum over this matter. The police are in tenterhooks. There should be statutory warning in newspapers to the public to take care of their belongings. If there is need, rifles may be provided to those who reside in big houses or bungalows. In addition the welfare association of area concerned should help the police by forming a squad of seven or eight persons to patrol at night. B.S. Balakumar, Safilguda
