`Heart attack cases rise during winter'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Though winter is almost on its way out, the incidence of heart attack and other heart ailment witnessed an increase of around 25 to 30 per cent this season.

Doctors at all major hospitals were kept on their toes throughout the winter as a large number of people reported with complaints of heart diseases, including heart attacks, and several of them underwent angioplasties.

"There is a marked increase in the number of angioplasties in winters. During this season, we conducted around 40 angioplasties on patients from across the country. We had more people complaining of problems like high cholesterol and high blood pressure in winters compared with summers," said Director of Saroj Hospital and Heart Institute Anil Bansal.

Senior Cardiology Consultant at Apollo Hospital S. K. Gupta said there was a 25 to 30 per cent increase in the occurrence of heart attacks and angioplasties during winters.

"Winters are bad for people with heart ailments. The stress on the heart increases during this season. In cold weather, the heart has to pump more blood and has to work harder to keep the body warm," he said.

Dr. Bansal, Head of the Cardiology Department of the Institute, explained: "Since human beings are euthermic animals, work required to keep the body temperature normal is much more in winters than in summers."
