`Security concerns hamper progress of e-commerce'

Staff Reporter

Fear of theft and privacy are the key detrimental factors

PERUNDURAI: E-commerce, despite its advantages, has not taken off the way it should have, because of security concerns, T.V. Skanthaswamy, Associate vice-president, Infosys Technologies Ltd., Mysore, has said.

"Though there are irresistible cost savings, e-business has not gone the way it should have, because of the key element trust," he said at the inauguration of the three-day `International Conference on Network Security and Workshop' on Monday at Erode Sengunthar Engineering College.

"As against the traditional commerce, where face-to-face transaction builds trust, e-commerce enjoys very little trust. Besides, the fear of theft, security, privacy of information and expected level of service are the key detrimental factors." He called upon students to work on these challenges.

On the business front, Mr. Skanthaswamy said the very fundamentals of business transactions have changed. "Earlier, one had the skills, produced what he could, identified the market and then strengthened the supply chain. Today, however, the customer comes to the front, where his needs are learnt, and then the process of who manufactures it, how it is done, and how it is supplied come later."

The traditional thinking had collapsed, he said.

On today's education, he said that unlike the pre-Independence days when education was meant to supply clerks to East India Company, today we needed managers to take on the entire world.

"Good technical knowledge alone is not enough. Human interaction is important, and one must know how to operate in different ethos, environment and work in different time zones with people of diverse nationalities."

Invasion

Earlier, in his address, J. Sudhanandhen, correspondent of the College said he hoped for a day where people could live without the fear of their Internet privacy being invaded. Principal of the College, Dr. T. Shanmugam, and Professor of Computer Science Engineering, V. Venkatachalam, participated.
