Rottela Panduga: 3 lakh people to take part

Exchange of bread slices to continue round the clock

DECKED UP: The Bara Shaheed dargah at Dargamitta in Nellore all spruced up on the eve of the three-day annual `Rottela Panduga'.

NELLORE: More than three lakh devotees of different faiths from across the country are expected to take part in the annual Rottela Panduga -- the festival of breads -- here at Bara Shaheed dargah from Tuesday.

Devotees, mostly women, offer prayers and leave bread slices in the nearby tank, while those with similar wishes pick them up. The exchange of bread slices continues round the clock for three days. The annual event is being observed on the sidelines of Moharram in the memory of 12 martyrs, who laid down their lives in the sacred war for communal harmony.

Enclosures

Meanwhile, hundreds of devotees, who have already come to Nellore from different parts of the country, alleged that the authorities concerned had failed to set up adequate number of makeshift enclosures for women. So is the case with temporary toilets, lamented a devotee Sayeed Hussien.

Another visitor to the dargah, S. Narasimhulu of Udayagiri, demanded that the dargah committee take up construction of permanent toilets as well as bathrooms.

But dargah committee president Asif Pasha claimed that the authorities had taken all steps to ensure hassle-free pilgrimage for devotees. The police had decided to deploy enough personnel to keep a vigil on anti-social elements.
