SHIMOGA: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said on Monday that his attempt to attend to public grievances as part of the anti-corruption drive had yielded encouraging results. He told presspersons here that more than half of the nearly 700 public grievances received by him against the indifference shown by officials had been settled in the presence of the officials concerned. The former Supreme Court judge said his request that more powers be granted to the Lokayukta was yet to be considered by the Government. He said the Government should accept the recommendation for disciplinary action against officials found guilty by the Lokayukta. Mr. Hegde said though the Lokayukta was better placed in Karnataka compared to other States as far the freedom to function was concerned, much more needed to be done to ensure better governance, particularly in the prosecution of those against whom charge sheets had been filed.
