Encroachments on tank removed

VELLORE: Encroachments including 25 houses and 16 brick kilns found on the irrigation tank in Kaniyambadi, about 13 km from Vellore, were demolished in a joint eviction drive conducted by the revenue department and the Public Works Department, with the help of the police on Monday.

Assembly panel directive

The action was taken following the directions of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Petitions Committee, which received petitions from the local farmers associations and the public about the presence of encroachments in the Kaniyambadi tank. As a result of these encroachments, the water-holding capacity of the tank was reduced.

According to a PWD spokesman, 43 houses have been built on the irrigation tank, of which 25 were demolished on Monday. The remaining houses would be demolished soon, he said.
