NEW DELHI: Indian pugilists made hay on the opening day of the 10th YMCA international boxing championship, but for featherweight Chottey Lal's unfortunate disqualification here on Monday. Flyweight Paramjeet Singh sent Chan Kai Kit of Hong Kong scurrying all over the ring with his incessant punches before the referee stopped the contest in the third round at the YMCA Sports Complex. Paramjeet, the Services boxer from Army Sports Institute, Pune, started tentatively, but improved upon his attacks in the second round before establishing a 23-3 lead to force the referee to stop the contest and made it to the semifinals.
Abrupt end
The challenge of Chottey Lal came to an abrupt end when the referee judged him to have hit his opponent Malaysia's Awang Awgkaji below the belt. Lal was in full flow as he opened up an 11-0 lead midway through the first round when Awang slouched on the mat writhing in pain. The referee gave him count till 10, but the Malaysian failed to pick himself up. Later, the referee consulted the judges and concluded that Lal had fouled. While the Iraq team managed to get visas and arrived on time, Thailand and Nepal pulled out at the eleventh hour and that meant the first round winner will be assured of a medal.
