Internal security wing to tackle terrorism

MALAPPURAM: Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the State police will soon have an internal security wing to tackle terrorist activities. An officer of the rank of Inspector-General of Police will oversee the functioning of the exclusive wing.

Mr. Balakrishnan was speaking after inaugurating a building of the State Special Branch unit here on Monday.

He said the formation of the special wing would be formally announced in a few days. All districts would have its units.

The special security wing would keep a close watch on the movement of hawala money as well as terrorist activities. The Government had already given its policy approval to the proposal for starting the wing.

Mr. Balakrishnan said that smart officers would be deployed in the wing. The Government's attitude to terrorists would be starkly different from its attitude to politicians. The Minister said that stringent measures would be taken to deal with goondas (anti-social elements). There will be no leniency from the Government in handling them, he said.

He said more efficiency would be instilled in the activities of the Special Branch. Efficient officers with illustrious track records would be appointed in intelligence wings, he said.

The Minister said the Kerala police Act was being amended to enable the force to take on the new challenges posed by the modern age.
