More areas brought under Madikeri CDP

Staff Correspondent

Curbs on construction around fort, Gaddige and Raja Seat

Madikeri: The Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for Madikeri will cover 15 km in and around Madikeri with a proposal to include Galibeedu and Ist Monnangeri villages, according to official information received here on Monday.

The Government approved the last CDP in 1997. The CDP would be revised once in 10 years, Subodh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, who presided over a preliminary meeting to revise the CDP, said. The CDP would now involve areas such as Madikeri city, villages of Karnangeri, Karawale-Badaga, Kalakeri-Nidugane, Hebbettageri, Makkandur, Ibnivalavadi, Kadagadal, Mekeri and Katakeri, apart from Galibeedu and Ist Monnangeri.

The meeting resolved to take measures to prevent construction around the fort, Gaddige, and Raja Seat, which had been declared as "specially controlled" zones. Mr. Yadav instructed the in-charge MUDA Commissioner K. Krishna Naik to take steps to include areas from Mangerira Muthanna Circle to Raja Seat as protected zones and obtain details from the Madikeri tahsidlar about the villages before revising the CDP map. Assistance of the survey department too should be taken, he said.

Former Minister M.C. Nanaiah suggested to Mr. Yadav to take into consideration the actual situation concerning the type of land with a view to protecting the hillocks in the city and allow construction of ground floor and additional two floors.

B.G. Anantashayana of the Shakti daily said that citizens should be given sufficient space to construct houses in the city limits since Madikeri city was expanding.

Lt. Gen. B.C. Nanda (retd.) said zones for parking vehicles should be made mandatory when licences were being issued for construction of shopping complexes. K.S. Devaiah, former president of the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC), said steps should be taken to protect the hillocks in and around the city, except private property.

Former vice-president of the CMC T.M. Aiyappa said that it was not proper to earmark private property for agriculture use in the city limits. Former president of the CMC Kaveramma Somanna, former councillor Monty Ganesh, and Madikeri taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president K.T. Baby Mathew were present.
