HUBLI: Former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University M.I. Savadatti has underscored the need for science that is useful to society. Speaking at the valedictory function of the Dharwad Zone Science Exhibition for college students here on Sunday, he said learning science should become a way of life.
Interest
He said that there was a need to create interest among students in science and develop self-confidence in them. Without understanding the potential of students, parents forced them to take up courses in engineering and medicine. As a result, the interest in science was slowly diminishing. If this trend continued, the country would face a shortage of scientists, he added. Convenor of the exhibition S.V. Sankanur, honorary secretary of Science Council C.D. Patil spoke. Joint Director of Collegiate Education of Dharwad R. Laxminarayan presided over the function.
Craze
Speaking after inaugurating the science exhibition on Saturday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said because of the craze for professional courses, there was a shortage of science teachers in colleges.
Prizes
Eight best exhibits were given prizes during the valedictory function. As many as 300 students from 35 colleges affiliated to the Karnatak University participated in the exhibition and 148 items were on display.
