`Good education will lead to happiness'

Dharma means code of conduct: Jois

DHARWAD: Former Governor of Bihar Rama Jois has said that good education, health, and character will lead to happiness in society.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the Ninth S.C. Javali (Centenary) Memorial National Moot Court Competition organised by the University College of Law here on Sunday, the former Chief Justice referred to "Titriya Upanishad" and said to be human was of prime importance.

Confusion

He said dharma was being confused with religion. Dharma meant code of conduct and had nothing to do with religion, he added.

Quoting "trivarga" from "smritis", he said that "smritis" only recognised dharma, artha and kama.

"Artha and kama becoming opposite to dharma are hazardous to society. The two should always be in conformity with the concept of dharma," he said.

Presiding over the function, Arun Bahadur Saharya, former Chief Justice of Punjab, said that logic, reasoning and objectivity were important for lawyers.

Changes

Analysing the changes in the legal profession, the former Chief Justice said it had become more technical than the earlier days. There are more opportunities for lawyers nowadays and they should be make the best of it, he added.

Goverment Law College, Mumbai, emerged as the winner in the two-day moot court competition and ILS Law College, Pune, was adjudged as the runner up.

Jasdeep Randhawa of the Government Law College, Mumbai, was declared the best advocate and also won the best lady advocate award for her outstanding performance in the competition.

Award

The Best Memorial Award was given to Symbiosis Society's Law College, Pune.

While Mr. Rama Jois distributed prizes, Mr. Arun Bahadur Saharya distributed certificates for the participating teams. Principal C.S. Patil welcomed the gathering.

Ramesh proposed a vote of thanks.
