Slaughterhouse to come up at Panchapur

S.Ganesan

The facility has an effluent treatment plant; to be set up at a cost of Rs. 39 lakh

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation Council has decided to establish the modern slaughterhouse at Panchapur dropping its earlier plan to set up the facility at Kottapattu, which ran into opposition from local residents and a section of councillors.

The facility, with effluent treatment plant, was proposed at an estimated cost of about Rs. 39 lakh to accommodate the group of traders operating now at Marsinghpet in Bheema Nagar.

But the move to establish the slaughterhouse at Nehru Street in Kottapattu on the outskirts of the city met with stiff resistance from local residents, which also found its echo in the previous council meeting.

The council, at its last meeting, deferred a decision and kept an official resolution on the subject in abeyance. When the resolution was brought back at an ordinary meeting of the council on Monday, some of the councillors reiterated their objections and demanded that a committee be set up to identify an alternative site. They suggested that the resolution be kept on hold until the committee arrives at a decision.

The Commissioner B.Balachandran pointed out that the High Court, in October last year, had said that the slaughterhouse should be constructed within six months. Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman suggested that the slaughterhouse could be established at Panchapur, where the Corporation's sewage treatment plant is located. This met with resistance from members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The Mayor overruled them and said that the slaughterhouse could be located without causing any problem to the residents.
