MCD offices open to accept affidavits

NEW DELHI: The zonal offices of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will remain open on Tuesday (a holiday on account of Muharram) to accept affidavits from traders in connection with the ongoing sealing drive in the Capital. So far 6,104 traders have filed their affidavits with the MCD. The maximum number of affidavits have been received from traders in Shahdara (South) Zone (1,559), while the lowest (224) have been filed in City Zone.

Cheats arrested

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested at Prashant Vihar here on charges of extorting money from people by posing as employees of the power distribution company NDPL. The police received a call from Sandeep Jain this past Saturday alleging that half-a-dozen people came to his flat in Rohini claiming that his electric meter had been tampered with, and demanded Rs. 4 lakhs to settle the matter. Suspecting that they were cheats, Mr. Jain overpowered two of the culprits with the help of his neighbours. Another member of the housing society, Deepak Jain, later identified one of the culprits who had extorted Rs. 75,000 from him.

Found dead

NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was found dead in his apartment at Garhi here on Sunday afternoon.

The decomposed body of Jeevan Singh was found hanging from a ceiling fan. He had been living alone in the apartment, the police said.

DUTA bandh

NEW DELHI: Several colleges joined a bandh call given by the Delhi University Teachers' Association on Monday to demand action against "autocratic style of functioning" of the Principal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. The DUTA general body has been demanding an impartial inquiry into the "style of functioning" and alleged misappropriation of funds by Principal Jitinder Kaur.
