dated January 31, 1957: Homage to Gandhiji

Thousands of people silently filed past Gandhiji's samadhi at Rajghat in the morning paying homage to the Mahatma on the ninth anniversary of his death on January 30, which is also observed as Martyrs' Day in memory of those who fell during the country's freedom struggle. Large crowds started visiting Rajghat since early in the morning when mass prayer and mass spinning were held in front of the samadhi. Among those who participated in the mass prayer and spinning were the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Prime Minister Nehru and the Congress President, Mr. Dhebar. Later, they laid wreaths at the samadhi. Among the other visitors at Rajghat were about a dozen tribal chiefs from NEFA and their wives, who had come to the capital in connection with the Republic Day celebrations.
