dated January 31, 1957: Chou at Visvabharati

The Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, was on January 30 honoured with the honorary degree of "Desikottama" by the Visvabharati University of Santiniketan at a special convocation on January 30. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chou En-lai said that in spite of the differences in the existing social systems of our two countries, "China and India have much in common in the stand which we take in our foreign relations because of many common experiences in the past and similar problems which we are facing now. Colonialist oppression and exploitation deprived us for a long time of the opportunity of developing our countries. We have now gained independence and both hope to concentrate our efforts on that task. We urgently need peace and are willing to live as friends with other countries on the basis of the five principles. We are also willing to have economic cooperation with other countries on the basis of mutual benefit. China and India are countries with the largest population in the world. The unity between us will play an increasingly important role in the maintenance of peace in Asia and the world. I believe we will continue to strengthen our friendship and further develop our cooperation in many respects so that we will jointly play the role which we should play."
