Buffalo menace in Wayanad

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: A wild buffalo gored to death a tribal woman at Panavalli in Kattikkulam, near Mananthavadi, in Wayanad district recently. She had gone to the coffee estate to pick beans. The wild buffalo died later.

On Tuesday morning, another wild buffalo got stuck in a private marshy land. This too happened in the same locality. People suspect the animal to have strayed there in search of water.

The area comes under the Begur forest range. Forest officials and local people are trying to capture the buffalo when reports last came in.

Man-animal conflict has become frequent in Wayanad district, where people live near many forest areas.

Herds as well as stray animals enter coffee estates and farmlands in search of food and water. The animal which comes alone is dangerous and difficult to spot, especially in the dark.

Leopards straying into residential areas had been a common incident in Wayanad district till recently.
