BANGALORE: The former Mayor of Bangalore and Janata Dal (United) leader B.V. Putte Gowda has urged the Government to provide more powers to the mayor and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) so that more development projects could be taken up. Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Putte Gowda demanded that the tenure of the mayor and deputy mayor be increased from the present one year to five years so that they could concentrate on development. He suggested that the Mayor should be given more powers as in the Kolkata City Corporation that practises the "Mayor in Council" system in which the mayor would have powers within the corporation similar to those enjoyed by a Chief Minister. Mr. Putte Gowda also sought executive powers for the mayor.
Facility for tourists
He suggested setting up of a facility for tourists to view Bangalore through a telescope from the Public Utility Building. Mr. Putte Gowda said his party was yet to receive replies to the show-cause notices issued to three MLAs for identifying themselves with Janata Dal (Secular).
