Rastogi to lead Indian challenge

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Karan Rastogi will spearhead the Indian challenge in the Asia-Oceania group `I' Davis Cup tie to be played indoors on red clay at Namangan, Uzbekistan, from February 9 to 11.

Skipper Leander Paes, Vivek Shokeen and Somdev Dev Varman will be the other members of the team. Rohan Bopanna was not available as he opted to focus on improving his ranking with tournaments in the U.S., and Prakash Amritraj was not considered as he was recovering from an injury.

Sunil Kumar will be the fifth member of the team. It may not be a surprise if Leander opts to play doubles with the left-hander, his erstwhile ward.

The 21-year-old Somdev Dev Varman is based in the U.S. and had reached the quarterfinals of a Futures tournament there last week. He had won a Futures tournament on clay in 2004, beating a string of quality players like the Indonesian Davis Cupper Prima Simpatiaji and Todor Enev of Bulgaria who had won the Futures event last week in Kolkata.
