VELLORE: Additional Director General of Police (Prohibition Enforcement) G. Thilagavathy has appealed to illicit arrack manufacturers to give up the nefarious trade and take up honourable jobs or business in view of the economic ruin they were causing to their own families and those of their brethren in the villages. Distributing rehabilitation assistance to the reformed former illicit arrack distillers at a function organised by the Police department at Samandhipuram on Monday, Ms. Thilagavathy said several poor families in the villages did not have money for providing nutritious food to the members and education to the children because of the heads of families squandering their earnings in liquor. The illicit arrack distillers and traders could seek jobs or do business based on their skills and qualifications.
Government help
The Government was ready to help those who wanted to give up the nefarious business and take to honourable jobs or business. "You will be digging your own grave if you think that you can earn more money through illicit distillation," she said. Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav assured the illicit arrack distillers that if they give up their business, the district administration was prepared to provide jobs to them on a daily wage of Rs.50 to Rs.80 under the Sampoorna Gramin Swarozgar Yojana and through the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation. T.P. Sundaramoorthy, DIG, Vellore Range, said if the women and elders in the village decide, they could eradicate illicit distillation of arrack.
Rotary Club offer
S. Kumar, president, Rotary Club of Arcot offered to meet the educational expenses of five students and the medical expenses of all students in the village from his personal funds. V. Balakrishnan, DSP, Ranipet said the people in the Adi Dravida colony of Sambasivapuram village took a pledge not to resort to illicit arrack manufacture at a meeting held recently in the colony. The police department was prepared to provide coaching to the youth who desired to appear for the written examinations for recruitment to the police force, he said.
