Minister opposes power project

KARWAR: Ananth Kumar Hegde, MP, has clarified that he is still against the establishment of a thermal power project at Tadari, near Gokarna. Expressing his views on the project here on Tuesday he said the social, economical and environmental aspects should be considered before establishing the project. On the claim of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, that it would be established by convincing the local people, Hegde questioned whether the Minister had any knowledge on Western Ghat region and the impact the project would have on it. — Correspondent

Four gold medals for Belgaum student

BELGAUM: Trupti V. Shinde, student doing her postgraduation in English in Lingaraj College of K.L.E. Society, bagged four gold medals and three cash prizes for scoring highest marks in the final year examination of the Karnataka University held during May-June, 2006. Chairman of KLES Prabhakar B. Training in safe use of LPG

HASSAN: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. here on Tuesday conducted training programme on safe use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for students at Sanjeevini Nursing College on Belur Road in Hassan as part of oil conservation fortnight. Fast in support of tribal people

BANGALORE: A group of women members of the National Alliance of People's Movement on Tuesday observed a six-hour fast in protest against the displacement of tribal people, Dalits, women, minorities and farmers and monopolisation of their resources, their rights and land. The fast, organised as part of the national programme chalked out by over 200 people's organisations, highlighted the issues of survival of fishermen, tribal people, Dalits and workers. — Staff Reporter

DSS to stage protests

BANGALORE: Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samithi (KDSS), led by N. Murthy, has decided to hold protests in front of the offices of Deputy Commissioners on February 3 in protest against the Supreme Court judgment that there could not be any blanket immunity from judicial review of laws inserted in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Murthy urged the Union Government to convene a session of Parliament soon and pass legislation to impose blanket immunity from judicial review of laws inserted in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. — Special Correspondent

`Curb celebrations that disturb peace'

BANGALORE: Former High Court Judge A.J. Sadashiva has urged the Government to take steps to curb celebrations that would harm the health of society. He was speaking in reference to the recent communal riots at Shivajinagar in Bangalore, at a function organised by Souharda Karnataka on Tuesday. While protests and demonstrations are important, rules must be framed to specify where and when they could be held, Mr. Sadashiva said.

City and Guilds to hold C.Eng exam

Bangalore: City and Guilds along with the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom will offer Chartered Engineering (C.Eng) academic level examinations in Bangalore. On Tuesday at Acharya College of Engineering, the programme was launched by Philip Riseborough, Head of Higher Level qualifications, City and Guilds. Principal of the college G.P. Railway facility

HUBLI: South Western Railway has provided one-minute stop at Khanapur Railway Station in the Hubli division for the following trains till February 10, in view of the Lakshmi Devi Jatra at Khanapur, according to a release: Dadar-Yashwantpur Chalukya Express; Yashwantpur-Dadar Chalukya Express; Dadar-Mysore Sharavati Express; Mysore-Dadar Sharavati Express; Miraj-Hubli Express; Hubli-Miraj Express. The Central Railway has decided to provide two-minute stop at Belapur Railway Station in the Solapur Division for the Bangalore-New Delhi-Bangalore Karnataka Express on an experimental basis for three months from February 1. — Staff Correspondent

Takes charge

Bangalore: S. Gagarin has taken over as group general manager of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. which covers Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli divisions. According to a press release, Mr. Gagarin belongs to the 1987 Civil Services batch of the Indian Railway Traffic Service. He has worked in various capacities in operations, safety and commercial departments in Southern Railway and South Western Railway, the release added. — Staff Reporter
