NEW DELHI:
Air Marshal Fali Homi Major has been appointed Chief of the Air Staff. He will take over on March 31 following the retirement of S.P. Tyagi.
He will be the first helicopter pilot to head the IAF. Earlier, only fighter pilots held the top post. He was selected on the seniority criteria.
Air Marshal Major, who heads the Eastern Air Command, has over 7,500 hours of flying experience and commanded a helicopter unit in Siachen Glacier.
He headed a squadron in Sri Lanka operations and awarded Vayu Sena. He was conferred Shaurya Chakra for undertaking a rescue mission in 1992 of winching 11 tourists out of a stranded cable car.
