Special Correspondent

MAHATMA REMEMBERED: Freedom fighter Ananta Sharma offering floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the Martyrs Day in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: Freedom fighter V.P. Deulagoankar said on Tuesday that the philosophy of non-violence professed by Mahatma Gandhi was more relevant today with different countries caught in the vortex of violence and sectarian conflicts.

Prof. Deulagoankar was speaking at the Martyrs Day organised to commemorate the 59th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Sangameshwar Auditorium organised jointly by the Nutan Vidyalaya Education Society, Swamy Ramanand Theertha Social and Economic Research Institute, National Integration Committee, Khadi Gramodyog Sangha, Gandhiji Vichara Prasara Male and Bharat Sewak Samaj.

Prof. Deulagoankar, who had never failed to participate in the Martyrs Day, braved his ill health and came to the auditorium with some help to offer floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and deliver his speech on the occasion.

He said the principles of non-violence and tolerance towards others followed by Mahatma Gandhi throughout his life were the final answer to all problems confronting the world today, which was facing unending armed conflicts, sectarian violence and communal hatred.

He said Mahatma Gandhi exhibited the power of non-violence and tolerance by freeing India from the British rule. Feedom Fighter and former Chairman of the Khadi Gramodyog Sangha Ananta Sharma inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp and offering floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.

The students of the post-graduate Department of the Music in Nutan Vidyalaya Education Society rendered bhajans, including "Vaishnavo Janate", a favourite of Mahatma Gandhi, and Ram Dhun.

The verses of different religions were recited as part of the day.

Secretary of the Ramanand Theertha Social and Economic Research Institute Vasant Kustagi presided over the function.
