Gulbarga troupe has a dream run

ALL SMILES: A happy troupe of the Omkar Nrutya Sadana at a press conference in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: The 21-member dance troupe of the Omkara Nrutya Sadana from Gulbarga city has returned home with a rich haul of prizes in the seventh All India Multilingual Children Youth Play Classical, Folk, Modern Dance Competition held from January 15 to 27 at Cuttack in Orissa.

Besides winning the Overall Best Institute Award, the students did their organisation by winning first prize in the Group Dance in Senior Category and first prize in the Classical Dance in the Junior Category.

Their dance teacher Shubangi Sudheendra was awarded the Special Jury Award in the competition.

Sadana spokesperson Rajasekhar Naidu, team manager Sudheendra and Ms. Shubandi, who introduced the team to presspersons here on Tuesday, said this was the first time that so many prizes were one by any team from Gulbarga in an all-India competition.

More than 2,000 artists and dancers from Assam, Manipur, Orissa, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, West Bengal, Arunchal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh participated in various competitions held at the All India Dance Competition organised by the National Institute of Performing Arts, New Delhi, National Centre of International Amateur Theatre Association, Denmark, and the Theatre Movement of Orissa jointly at the sprawling Kala Vikas Kendra in Cuttack.

Mr. Naidu said the dance troupe comprising Pushpa, Krutika, Krutika Hegde, Soudamini Sarnad, Shradha Jagirdhar, Damini Naidu, Shrutika Sugurmutt and Pragnya Haribal won the first prize for their performance, "Shila Balika", in the Senior Category Group Dance (Semi Classical).

In the Junior Category, the troupe from the Omkar Nrutya Sadana consisting of Vaishnavi, S.K. Sowmya, Varalaxmi S. Gangane, M. Mithali, M.S. Krutika, Twinkle Tiwari, Akshata A. Patil, Shreya G. Borgoankar, and Apoorva R. Muttagi won the first prize with their classical performance of "Ganesha Vandane".

In the senior category, the troupe from the Omkar Nrutya Sadana won the second place in the classical dance performance "Shiva Panchakshari Stotra", and Meera Vijay won the second prize for her classical dance performance "Jayadeva Ashtapathi".

Dhamini Naidu won the second prize for her performance "Abhinaya" in semi-classical dance competition.

Mr Naidu said in the junior category the dance troupe had won many prizes, including the second place for folk dance "Deeparadhane" by Vaishanavi, Mithali, Twinkle Tiwari, Akshata, and Shreya Borgoankar.
