CHENNAI: Sun Microsystems India has identified 18 Tier II and III cities to spread its presence through its partner network. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Rajesh Rege, Director (Sales), said these markets were growing and there was huge spending on infrastructure. To tap the potential, the company had announced the expansion of its sales and marketing operations in Chennai. This team would take care of the burgeoning IT demand in Chennai and its surrounding areas. Mr. Rege said the company had recently set up here its first control centre in the APAC region. Mr. Rege said Sun was having sales and support office in five cities and had 1,500 employees in both sales and control centre. Baba Sam, Director, said the overall IT market in Chennai was $200 million. Of this, Sun would address over $50 million through the partner model. He singled out IT and ITeS (IT-enabled services), manufacturing, government and emerging businesses as potential areas for revenue. Mr. Sam said the Chennai business would also anchor the entire Tamil Nadu and Kerala businesses. The beginning of Sun's fiscal year 2007 had already seen a slew of products from its systems and storage stable. The company continued to offer its customers more choices to improve efficiency and lower costs in the data centre.
