Nuclear disarmament

This refers to the news report `Committed to nuclear disarmament: Sonia' (Jan. 30). The Congress president's remarks are welcome.

The problem, however, is in the approach we are going to adopt in our bid to honour that commitment. Aligning with the U.S. in stopping other nations from making nuclear weapons is itself against the concept of disarmament. Real disarmament should start with the nuclear powers.

K. Ganesh,
Madurai

Ms. Sonia Gandhi justifying India's possession of nuclear weapons, at the conference on `Peace, Non-violence and Empowerment, Gandhian Philosophy in the 21st century,' on the ground of strategic compulsions does not seem correct. The statement does justice neither to Mahatma Gandhi nor to the topic of the conference dealing with peace. If the logic is to be applied globally, all nations will vie with one another to make nuclear bombs and weapons of mass destruction.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,
Salem
