Letters to the Editor
The article `When even Pax Romana seems gentler' (Jan. 30) reminded me of a Charlie Chaplin movie I saw a long time ago. Chaplin, a watchmaker, is approached by a man wanting to get his watch repaired.
Y. Parameswaran Menon,
In these times of media-conditioned reality, the article is a humane one. It raises questions about the reality of the advancement of civilisation and whether mankind has made real progress since the so-called barbaric age. Whatever the answers to these questions, the article deserves praise for continuing the debate on civilisation and human values.
