BJP decides to go it alone in municipal elections

Staff Reporter

Laxman terms TDP-CPI(M) pact opportunistic

  • Party to contest in over 60 wards in Vizag
  • State charged with neglecting welfare hostels

VISAKHAPATNAM: The BJP will go it alone in the elections to the Visakhapatnam and the Rajahmundry municipal corporations and the Hindupur Municipality, BJP State general secretary and in-charge of the elections in Viskahapatnam K. Laxman has said.

Declaring that the BJP would contest in over 60 wards in Visakhapatnam, he said an exercise to assess the strength and decide the nominees was taken up.

Whether former Mayor D.V. Subba Rao would contest or not, announcing the mayoral candidate prior to the election and the wards where the party stood a chance of winning would be discussed in the party and a clear picture would emerge by Wednesday, he told reporters here on Tuesday.

Mr. Laxman said other parties were too eager to strike an alliance for the sake of power, ignoring ideological differences.

He recalled that the Left parties had contested by aligning with the Congress in the 2004 Assembly elections and played a key role in its victory. Now the CPI(M) was going along with the TDP and wanted to know what change had come about in the economic policies of the TDP between now and then and termed the truck as opportunistic. He accused the TDP of failing to play the role of a responsible opposition as it was beset with internal differences, and asserted that the BJP would evolve as a deciding factor by 2009 Assembly elections.

    Main plank

Stating that the failures of the UPA and the Congress Governments would be its campaign themes, Mr. Laxman charged the State Government with neglecting social welfare hostels and cutting down scholarships to students.

Hundreds of hostels had been facing closure owing to non-payment of power and water bills and rent to buildings.
