Most girls drop out of school for financial reasons: ZP chief

ANANTAPUR: Education of girls plays a crucial role in shaping families as educated mothers make a lot of difference in raising children, Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha has said.

Speaking at a function organised by Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited to disburse the second instalment of Godavari Grameena Patashala Balikala Pratibha Puraskara Pathakam here on Tuesday she said most girls who discontinued education in the rural areas did so purely due to financial problems.

Encouragement of the kind being given by GFCL would help rural students make it big in life, she said. General Manager of GFCL G.V. Subba Reddy said merit scholarships were given to rural girls in six districts in the State in 2005-06 and assistance was given in 13 districts in 2006-07. Besides, similar scholarships were also given in three districts each of Karnataka and Maharashtra in the current academic year. P. Sireesha, a beneficiary of ZP High School, Kanekal, in the district, came on to the dais and vowed to score more than 500 marks in SSC. Earlier this academic year the company announced scholarships of Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 1,500, respectively, for two top scoring Class IX girls each in 30 selected schools.
