Patancheru (Medak): A panel discussion on `Impact of higher energy prices' at the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) on Tuesday had speakers opining that it was not right to blame agriculture alone for the accumulated losses of State power boards. It was part of a two-day international conference on `Linkages between energy and water management for agriculture in developing countries.' Opening the discussion Mark Giordano, head, Institutions and Policies global research division, IWMI said though per unit production cost of energy had come down, the per capita cost had gone up over the years. A. Narayanamoorthy from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics dwelt on the option of charging farmers full price. He said if it were done, farmers would demand quality power when required, unlike the present system of night time supply. However, he pointed out that the only benefit would be decreased ground water exploitation.
