VIJAYAWADA: If a voter fails to indicate his or her first preference vote in the ballot paper to be used in the elections to the Legislative Council, the ballot will become invalid. This was made clear by adviser to the general administration department and election consultant Ch. Ramabrahmam on Tuesday. Addressing a meeting held to create an awareness of the method of electing members to the Legislative Council, Mr. Ramabrahmam explained that there would be no symbols on the ballot paper and voters should, therefore, have a good knowledge of the candidates in the fray. Voters should only use figures like 1, 2 and 3 to indicate his or her preference, and the vote would be considered invalid if words were written. Out of the 90 members to be of the council, MLAs and members of local bodies would elect 31 each, graduates and teachers eight each, while Governor would nominate the remaining 12. Though there was no quota for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates from these categories would be eligible for 50 per cent concession in the deposit they pay, which would mean that they would have to pay a deposit of Rs 2,500 only.
