ANANTAPUR: Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) has urged the State Government to implement the Odyssey Science City venture with transparency. Welcoming the State Government's decision to set up the science city in O.D. Cheruvu and Amadaguru mandal in the district State vice-president of JVV M. Geyanand on Tuesday suggested that the Government make public the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with a consortium of four Singapore and Australian companies. Such a move would enable the people of the district to debate the massive project objectively, he said. He felt the secrecy being maintained over the agreement was raising suspicion and creating confusion among the people in the district.
Social costs
As per the information available to the public realisation of the project would make Anantapur district bear unprecedented social costs. The industries proposed in the science city would lead to environmental problems in the area. Thousands of families would be displaced. Dr. Geyanand cautioned the Government against leading the project into the hands of realtors. He urged the Government to impose 33 per cent surcharge on land transactions related to the project. The amount could be spent on basic amenities such as drinking water, education, health and rural employment in the district.
