KOTTAYAM: The Ekbal Commission to looking into development prospects of the five medical colleges and also of setting up a medical university, held its sitting at Kottayam Medical College on Tuesday. One of the major suggestion that came up during the sitting was the need to address the issue of the acute staff shortage in all the departments. Unless this issue was addressed, any other steps to improve the public health dispensation system would come to nought, it was pointed out. The need to develop peripheral hospitals as a means to ensure referral facilities at the Medical College Hospital was also taken up. Appointment of an officer from the IAS cadre as executive director to manage the medical college was demanded by the Democratic Youth Federation of India. Strengthening of the casualty department, setting up teleconferencing facilities and construction of a laboratory complex at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital were also suggested by those who participated in the sitting.
