SHIMOGA: Zilla panchayat member B. Tejappa has stressed the need for better healthcare in villages.

Inaugurating a seminar on the "National Rural Health Mission," organised by the Information Department, the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Kumsi Gram Panchayat at Kumsi on Monday, Mr. Tejappa said that awareness should be spread on the various welfare measures available, as this would ensure that their benefits reached more people.

He said public health centres should be equipped to handle all emergency cases and childbirth.

He promised that a post-mortem unit would be sanctioned for the government hospital at Kumsi. The "Suvarna Gram Yojane" would be launched in the region, he said.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer H.B. Shivalingamurthy said that the mission was aimed at addressing health problems in villages.

He said that under the mission, women who had BPL (below the poverty line) ration cards would be given a maternity allowance of Rs. 500. In cases of deliveries at public health centres, Rs. 750 would be given, while Rs. 1,500 would be given for Caesarean cases.

Kumsi Gram Panchayat president Manjula Dharmendra, who presided, said that women doctors should be posted to public health centres to attend to childbirth cases.
