Call to shed slavish mentality

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Filmmaker P.T. Kunjumohammed has said that a phobic submissiveness haunts the Malayali, especially when he is out of the State.

Addressing the talk series `Maarunna Malayali' organised by the Press Club here on Tuesday, Mr. Kunjumohammed said that ironically, education appeared to have triggered this fear. "Even our Members of Parliament in general fail to show the boldness required while attending Parliament sessions. We often use the term `kochu Keralam' [small Keralam] to endorse the fear in us. Kerala is in no way a small geographical entity. We should have the grit to call it `valiya Keralam' [big Keralam]. Only then will the slavish mentality within us will be erased."

He alleged that biggest slave market in the world is the Gulf countries and Malayalis constitute the major chunk of the expatriates serving there with slavish attitude. "When hundreds of Malayalis, including women, are slogging as slaves by being forced or cheated into doing menial jobs, none of us are raising even a finger. When there is a uniform airfare pattern, why should the Malayali alone pay more for air travel from Nedumbassery or Thiruvananthapuram," he asked.
