Plantation workers may get cover

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) will consider a proposal to extend accident insurance to permanent workers at plantation estates.

At its next meeting on Thursday, the CCEA will also deliberate on increasing the personal accident cover for the plantation sector to Rs. 1 lakh, said Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh here on Tuesday.

At present, the scheme is restricted to growers with landholding of up to 10 hectares and the insurance cover is restricted to Rs. 25,000. The Commerce Ministry's proposal is similar to the recommendation made by a task force on the plantation sector, which also wants it expanded to cover spices and floriculture.

The CCEA will also consider a proposal to implement a weather-linked insurance scheme for coffee.
