Mayawati blames SP, BJP for Gorakhpur violence

`Governor should pressure the Government to refer the case to CBI'

LUCKNOW: The Bahujan Samaj Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, alleged on Tuesday that the communal violence in Gorakhpur was sponsored by the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. She charged the two parties with pursuing their hidden agenda in a bid to regain their support base.

Addressing a press conference, Ms. Mayawati urged the Governor, T.V. Rajeswar, to recommend the dismissal of the State Government and imposition of President's rule in the State. She said the Governor should visit the town and assess the situation.

As in the case of the Nithari killings, the Governor should pressure the Government to refer the Gorakhpur communal violence case to the Central Bureau of Investigation, she said. Leaders of all political parties should be banned from entering Gorakhpur.

Ms. Mayawati said that if necessary an all-party Parliamentary delegation should visit the town and present its report to the Central Government.

Symbolic dharna

She announced that BSP workers would stage a one-day symbolic dharna and demonstration at the commissionaires, barring the Gorakhpur Division, on Wednesday.

Arrested

The Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Lalji Tandon and State unit president of the BJP Kesari Nath Tripathi were arrested at Safedabad in Lucknow and Soraon near Allahabad on Tuesday. They were proceeding to Gorakhpur along with BJP supporters. They were later released. Talking to reporters, Mr. Tripathi accused the State Government of pursuing vote bank politics. Terming the BJP MP, Yogi Aditya Nath's arrest on the eve of the 9th and 10th day of Moharram a deliberate attempt to incite communal violence in the State, Mr. Tripathi said that if timely action had been taken the situation would not have deteriorated.

He claimed that thousands of BJP workers courted arrest in Barabanki, Sultanpur, Gonda, Shohratgarh and Siddhartnagar towns on Tuesday.

He condemned the police lathicharge on BJP workers in Salempur in Deoria district.
