MUMBAI:
The BJP on Tuesday `strongly condemned' the Congress for holding Satyagraha centenary and making the national movement into a partisan programme.
The BJP vice-president and MP, M. Venkaiah Naidu, who minced no words at a press conference here on Tuesday, questioned the propriety and motives of the Congress in holding the fete.
He said that the Satyagraha was an integral part of India's freedom struggle and it should have been the Union Government and not the ruling party hosting such an event. "But the Congress wanted to practise political `untouchability' and project that Ms. Sonia Gandhi had the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and misuse the celebrations," he said.
Mr. Naidu took exception to the Congress not inviting the BJP to participate in it. "They decided not to call the BJP but invite the Communists who had opposed the Satyagraha and abused and ridiculed Mahatma Gandhi."
