JOINT EFFORT: Donors at the mega blood donation camp at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday. Photo: V. Sreenivasa Murthy
BANGALORE: People came in hundreds to Sree Kanteerava Stadium here, where an attempt was made to create a world record for collection of blood. It was organised by Bangalore Blood Donation Drive Society, an initiative by S. Chinnaswamy, Chief Engineer, Central Public Works Department, to mark the Martyrs' Day. Employees of 50 blood banks from different parts of the State, over 100 doctors and 500 paramedical personnel were present to help the donors. A total of 400 beds were arranged. Everyone who donated blood got a glass of juice and a token for food (payasam and puliyogare) besides a certificate for donation. The certificate mentioned the name, blood group and appreciated the donor's participation in the "World's largest blood donation camp".
First-timers
Many of the blood donors were apparently first-timers. Some were rejected for consuming alcohol the previous night or those with recent medical history. Priyanka Joseph, a nursing student of St. Mary's Institute of Nursing in Hebbal Kempapura, was upset as she could not donate blood. "They told me I cannot donate because I suffered jaundice two months ago." All that she could do was help her classmate Archana B.S., who felt giddy after donating blood. Jeema Mathew was overjoyed to have donated blood in the effort to create a world record. Some did have a tough time after donating blood like K. Rehamathunnisa of Florence School, Hennur, who collapsed. Among the donors were a couple who had married on Monday, over 200 Home Guards, several NCC cadets, Defence personnel, doctors from NIMHANS, students of educational institutions such as CPSV College, celebrities such as Ashwini Nachappa (sportsperson), Nagathihalli Chandrashekar (film director), IAS-IPS couple Sudhir Hari Singh and Jija Madhavan Hari Singh. Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi and long jump sensation Anju Bobby George were among the visitors.
