Tuticorin: N Pandiarajan assumed charge as Joint Director of Agriculture here on Monday. Earlier he served as the Deputy Director in Virudhunagar district.

Two arrested for carrying explosives

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Virudhunagar police have arrested two persons for carrying explosive materials in a dangerous manner in a vehicle here on Tuesday.

The police said an explosive dealer from Dindigul had sent the materials together in a van for a quarry in Tiruthangal. The driver, K. Maruthudurai, and another person S. Abdul Rahim, were arrested.

Pledge against untouchability

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The officials and staff of the Collectorate took anti-untouchability pledge on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary on Tuesday. The District Revenue Officer, R. Nandagopal, administered the pledge. The officials observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to martyrs. The Project Officer, Gladstone Pushparaj, and the Deputy Director (Panchayats), Selvaraj, were present.

Gandhi remembered

DINDIGUL: Members of the Human Rights wing of the Congress party observed a dawn-to-dusk fast in front of the municipality office here on Tuesday to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 59th death anniversary. The fast was observed to propagate Gandhian thoughts among the public.

Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Tuesday stood at 115 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 353 cusecs and a discharge of 550 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 37.96 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow 646 cusecs and a discharge of 355 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 2,169 mcft. — Staff Reporter

Chief Minister arrives in Thanjavur

Thanjavur : The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, arrived here on Tuesday evening.

He stays for the night. On Wednesday, he leaves for Nagapattinam where he will participate in a function to hand over houses built by Mata Amirthanandamayee Trust. The Chief Minister was received by Central and State Ministers, MLAs and party workers on his arrival here.

"Don't pay money for winnowing at DPCs"

Thanjavur : The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has appealed to farmers not to pay any amount of money for winnowing paddy at the Direct Purchase Centres as the TNCSC has arranged machines for winnowing paddy at its cost.

In a release issued here on Tuesday, T. Soundaiah, Senior Regional Manager of the corporations, said that winnowing machines of the corporation and the ones hired from private parties were now being used at the DPCs.

Women self-help groups had been permitted to hire winnowing machines and use them.

If bill clerks or any other staff demanded additional amount for paddy, farmers could complain to Senior Regional Manager at the following number 9443732305, SRM Office: 04362-235321.

Pre-budget meeting

KARAIKAL : The Karaikal district administration in the Union Territory of Puducherry convened a pre-budget meeting under the chairmanship of Sudhir Kumar, Collector, here on Tuesday.

Several proposals of development activities of Karaikal region for taking up in the Parliament were discussed with M. Ramadoss, Puducherry MP.

Chairmen of Commune panchayats and heads of various welfare organisations attended the meeting.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 84.58 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 185 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Water supply on rotation basis

ERODE: Water supply would be supplied on a rotation basis to the residents of Erode with immediate effect. This was due to stoppage of water from Mettur Stanley Reservoir into the Cauvery River, the main source for water supply to the district.

According to a press release, the Commissioner of Erode Municipality, K. R. Selvaraj, said that the pumping of water from Cauvery River has been affected since Tuesday evening. The supply would be streamlined once the situation improves.

The Commissioner wanted the residents to bear this inconvenient and use the water economically. He made a special request to them to boil the water. - Staff Reporter

Closure of IMFL shops

ERODE: All the IMFL shops and its bars will be closed on February 1 for the Vadalure Ramalinga Adigalar Memorial Day. Severe action would be taken against violators.

Bank watchman murdered

ERODE: Avinashi of Kandichalai village near Punjai Puliampatty, a watchman at a Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank (PACB), was found murdered on the bank compound on Tuesday morning. According to police, when some unidentified persons tried to break open the bank on Monday night Avinashi prevented them. They murdered him and escaped from the scene. Nothing was stolen from the bank. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sathyamangalam, N. Subramanian, visited the scene of crime.

Killed in accident

NAMAKKAL: A couple were killed in a road accident in Pudansanthai near here on Tuesday.

The police said Chinnan (55) of Nadupatti and his wife Palaniyammal (50) were walking on the road, when a car lost control and hit them.

Palaniyammal was killed on the spot.

Broken "spurt" piece recovered

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), which is undertaking dredging work of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP) at the Adam's bridge, has located a piece of a `spurt', the equipment in the dredger. It broke down from the main dredger CSD (cutter suction dredger) Aquarius.

However, officials are still trying to retrieve another piece of the dredger.

N.K. Raghupathy, Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, told The Hindu that the cutting work of the dredging had been temporarily stopped due to damage to the spurt. A floating crane from Chennai Port Trust, which was engaged in retrieving the spurt, had recovered it. The spurt had to be taken to the Cochin shipping yard for welding. — Staff Reporter

Public hearing postponed

TIRUNELVELI: District Revenue Officer and Collector (in-charge) G. Loganathan has announced that the public hearing to be held on January 31 on the proposed expansion of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project had been postponed indefinitely.

The public hearing held at the Collectorate on October 6 last ended on a chaotic note after anti-nuclear groups and their supporters staged a protest against the project. — Staff Reporter

21 nursing students suspended

CHENNAI: Government Stanley Medical College authorities have suspended 21 nursing students for ragging their juniors. The suspension order was issued on Monday night, said dean in-charge, Mustaq Ahmed Khan. The complaint was made by 38 students of the first year.

The seniors have been suspended until further orders and the quantum of the punishment would be decided later, depending on the severity of the cases, Dr. Khan said. In an inquiry instituted following media reports, college authorities found that the new students were asked to shave their moustache and enact postures from adult magazines. — Staff Reporter

CPI condemns school incident

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has condemned the discriminatory treatment meted out to Dalit students at a Panchayat Union Middle School in Ambujavallipettai in Cuddalore district.

In a statement here on Tuesday, CPI State secretary Tha. Pandian said Dalit students of the school were prevented from participating in sports and cultural events during the Republic Day celebrations. It was shameful that such incidents took place in schools even 59 years after the Independence, he said.

Mr. Pandian said such incidents highlighted the need to evolve long-term measures to eradicate the scourge of untouchability from schools. The Government must make efforts to liberate children from caste fanaticism, the CPI leader said. — Special Correspondent

Assumes office

CHENNAI: Saramma Thomas on Monday assumed charge as Additional Commissioner/Regional Director of Tamil Nadu Region of the Employees State Insurance Corporation. Prior to the posting here she was Additional Commissioner in the headquarters office, New Delhi, according to an official press release. — Special Correspondent
