VISAKHAPATNAM: Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and J. Deepan Chakkravarthy will play an eight-round match for the Rs. 1.5 lakh prize money Vizag Challenger Trophy at the VUDA Children's Theatre here from February 2 to 9. This match will be the first tournament for Humpy after she has been selected for the Padma Sri award and also for the first time that a match between two GMs is being organised in India on the lines of candidates match held abroad, said organising secretary of AP Chess Association K.V.V. Sarma at a press conference here on Tuesday. The winner will take home Rs. 90,000 and the loser will get Rs. 60,000. The All India Chess Federation has approved the Vizag Challenger Trophy. After the Challenger Trophy, the two GMs will also play a six-game rapid games tournament on Feb. 10 and 11 which is being organised to popularise the game and attract more children towards chess. Along with the contest between the two GMs, an all-India FIDE rating tournament will be held to help players from this region and also the neighbouring Orissa and Chhattisgarh and other States to improve their ratings. The East Coast Chess Academy is organising the two events in association with the All Vizag District Chess Association and the AP Chess Association. The Vizag Challenger Trophy games will be covered online on the district association's website www.vizagchess.com and International Arbiter V. Balakrishna Rao will be the chief arbiter of the matches. The FIDE tournament carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh with prizes to be given down to the 25th placed player in the open category with the top player receiving Rs. 12,000. There are prizes for boys and girls and also physically challenged persons. Office-bearers of East Coast Chess Academy K. Nageswara Rao, Mattapalli Chalamayya, R.C. Sethi and P. Ramakrishna Rao gave details of the tournaments.
