ADILABAD: A bandh has been called by the Basar IIT Sadhana Samiti in all towns and villages along the 11 km NH 7 stretch through Adilabad district on February 1. The bandh call along with the `maha dharna' on the same road is being organised to press for establishment of the proposed IIT at Basar. In Adilabad district, the bandh and the `maha dharna' will be staged between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Penganga bridge bordering Maharashtra and Soan bridge bordering the neighbouring Nizamabad. Samiti convenor and Telugu Desam Party spokesman S. Venugopalachary said over one lakh people are expected to participate in the dharna to be staged at 30 locations on the road. He offered to quit politics if an IIT was not established at Basar as a result of efforts made by Congress MLAs from the district. He urged the Congress MLAs to break their silence and make efforts for the IIT. Kitchens will be set up at these places, which include both the borders as well as Nirmal and Adilabad towns.
Traffic diversion
Meanwhile, District Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said that the police had informed neighbouring Maharashtra counterparts about the impending blockade to the arterial road and suggested alternative routes. The traffic coming from Nagpur was to take the Wankidi road from Chandrapur and via Mancherial and Karimnagar to reach the capital.
