BHOPAL: The Raj Bhavan here now has a website of its own, loaded with historic photographs, anecdotes and the history of a mansion that was once the residence of the British political agent posted in Bhopal. The website -- http://www.rajbhavanmp.ind.in/ -- was officially launched by the Governor, Balram Jakhar, over the weekend. It traces the history of a 19th Century building that was later transformed into the official residence of the State Governor when Bhopal became the capital of the reorganizsd State of Madhya Pradesh. The building, earlier called Lal Kothi, was constructed in 1880 by Nawab Shahjehan Begum, the ruler of erstwhile Bhopal State. Besides the building's history, the website gives an account of pre-Independence and post-independence visitors. Prominent among those who came here before Independence were British Viceroys Marques of Lansdowne, Lord Elgin, Lord Hardinge, and Lord Irwin. Some of the dignitaries visiting the place in the post-Independence era were President Rajendra Prasad, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and the Dalai Lama have also stayed here. The website provides information about all former Governors of the State.
