Workers' march held

ALAPPUZHA: The AITUC district council held a workers march from Bhattathiri Purayidom here to Alappuzha RDO Office on Tuesday morning demanding a solution to problems facing the industrial sector in the district. A public meeting was held at Bhattathiri Purayidom prior to the march. CPI district secretary T. Purushothaman inaugurated the march. S. Karunakara Kurup presided. Later a dharna was held before RDO office where the march ended. P. Thilothaman, MLA, inaugurated the dharna. Those who spoke included T.J. Anjelose, V. Mohan Das, N.P Kamaladharan and K.D. Selected for Kalakad Award

KOLLAM: The play `Puraskaram' by Vamadevan Kalalaya has been selected for the Kalakad Award-2007. The award, instituted by the A.P. Kalakad Memorial Trust, carries a cash prize of Rs.5,001 and a citation. Twenty-five entries were received for the award. It will be presented at a function at Paravur on February 8. — Staff Reporter

BJP to stage taluk office march

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday will stage a march to all five taluk offices in the district in protest against the rise in the prices of essential commodities. Party State secretary A.G. Unnikrishnan would inaugurate the march at Pathanamthitta, BJP district president T.R. Ajithkumar and general secretary Asokan Kulanada said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The march led by the former BJP State president C.K. Padmanabhan in protest against the poor condition of MC Road would be accorded a rousing reception in the district on February 7, they said. — Staff Reporter

Murali to open NCP district meet

PATHANAMTHITTA: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) State president K. Muraleedharan will inaugurate the party district meet to be held at the Kizhakkedathu Mariyam Complex here on Friday. Party leaders A.C. Shanmughadas, T.P. Peethambaran and M.P. Gangadharan would address the meeting, said NCP district president Kodumon Gopinthan at a press conference here on Tuesday. As many as 2,000 delegates representing 63 mandalam committees of the party would attend the district convention, Mr. Nair said. — Staff Reporter

Recruitment test postponed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The written test for recruitment to the posts of Assistant Sub-Inspector (Steno) and Head Constable (Ministerial) in CRPF, scheduled for February 25 has been postponed to March 25. P.G. Gopinathan Nair, DIGP, CRPF, Pallipuram, in a press note, said that the postponement was due to administrative reasons. All candidates who were found eligible to appear for the test were being informed through call letters. There was, however, no change in the conduct of the test in the second phase, which would commence on April 20 as scheduled. - Staff Reporter

Last date extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last date for submitting entries for the painting competition being organised among Plus Two and college students by the Jalanidhi has been extended to February 10. Cash awards will be given to the district and State-level winners. The entries of schools for the Rain harvesting 2007 prizes of the Jalanidhi will also be accepted till then. The Jalanidhi is offering a first prize of Rs.1 lakh and second prize of Rs.50,000 at the State-level and first prize of Rs.10,000 and second prize of Rs.5,000 at the district level. The application form can be downloaded from the website www.jalanidhi.com or collected from its office free of cost. - Special Correspondent

Consumers' plea to KSEB

Thiruvananthapuram: The Confederation of Consumer Vigilance Centre has in a memorandum submitted to the Kerala State Electricity Board and the Power Minister, demanded that the KSEB withdraw the notice it has issued for collecting additional security deposit from consumers. KSEB has issued the notice to even those consumers who took connections 20 or 30 years ago and the security deposit amount was arbitrarily fixed by the board. The centre said the board could collect additional security deposit only after checking the amount that was already paid by the consumers against the monthly power consumption. - Staff Reporter

Changampuzha award for Sacheendran

KOCHI: This year's Changampuzha Puraskaram, instituted by Changampuzha Cultural Centre, Edappally, for poetry has been awarded to M.M. Sacheendran for his work `Perumazha Kandittundo?' Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, centre secretary M.D. Nair said that 80 collections of poetry were submitted for the award this year. The award is given to collections of poetry published during the three years till June 30, 2006. Only the first editions of original works were considered for the award. - Staff Reporter
