KOCHI: As the next phase of Pol-Com (Police Communities Initiatives in Kochi City), the city police held a meeting of retired police officers and personnel on Tuesday. The meeting, held at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute hall here, discussed various ways to integrate the community with mainstream policing. P. Vijayan, City Police Commissioner, who inaugurated the meeting, said the service of the former police personnel could be effectively used for improving community policing. Mr. Vijayan said it would also help solve the problems faced by the retired personnel and end social isolation. K. Laljy, Circle Inspector, Palluruthy, and State president of the Kerala Police Officers Association, presided. Former Superintendents of Police Martin K. Mathew and James George addressed the gathering.
Regular meetings
In the interaction that followed the inaugural session, one of the participants suggested regular interactions between the community and the police force. The Police Commissioner said meetings of former police personnel in all police station limits in the city would be held before February 10. City Police planned to streamline information flow from the community to curb crime. The city police have initiated interactions with communities such as residents associations, merchants' union, private security personnel, hotel and restaurants' associations and manpower consultants as part of the Pol-Com drive.
Committee
A coordination committee with the Police Commissioner as its chairman was formed to monitor the interaction between the community and former the police personnel. Other office-bearers of the committee include former Superintendents of Police Martin K. Mathew and C.K. Sadasivan (general convenors); P.C. Kunjukunju, ASI, Control Room (convenor); James George, former Superintendent of Police; Mr. Laljy, and K.J. George Francis, former head constable (vice-chairmen); C.K. Balakrishnan, former Sub-Inspector; and C.G. Antony, former head constable (joint convenors); C.P. George, former Sub-Inspector (treasurer); and K. Sudhan, former ASI; former Sub-Inspectors Francis K.F., B.D. Balan, and Mohammedali; K.I. Parvathy, former WSI; K.K. Krishnan, former ASI; and Sukumaran, former police constable, as executive committee members. The meeting also honoured nine members of the force who are due to retire on Wednesday. Mr. Vijayan presented mementos to P.G. Xavier, Sub-Inspector, AR Ernakulam; P.V. Johny, Sub-Inspector, Vigilance; Abdul Majeed, ASI, Kannamali; T.S. Kuttappan, ASI, Vigilance; E.I. Thankappan, ASI, Thrikakkara; Ismail, ASI, State Special Branch; P.K. Viswanathan, ASI, City Traffic; Venu, ASI, State Special Branch; and T.X. Michael, ASI, Thoppumpady.
