Officials come under fire from Chief Minister

Special Correspondent

Seeks quick solutions to complaints

  • Says officials must be vigilant against corruption
  • Asks secretaries to ensure that time-bound action

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has asked officials to maintain eternal vigilance for solving common man's problems, which is their main responsibility, in addition to implementing development programmes.

The Chief Minister, who was inaugurating a conference of district collectors and heads of departments here on Tuesday, asked the officials to take expeditious steps on complaints received from people. It should not be seen as something which could be postponed because of other hectic work.

He said unnecessary delays led to corruption. Vigilant action should be taken to root out corruption. He charged the officials with continuing their indifference in taking administration to the lowest level and implementing the decisions taken by the Government. It would not be tolerated. He asked the secretaries to ensure that time-bound action was taken on files relating to their departments. The District Collectors should take the initiative for disposing of pending files in district-level offices.

He asked the officials not to repeat the lapses which took place in the past in the implementation of Centrally sponsored schemes.

Steps should be taken in the beginning of the year itself to prepare schemes, get clearance for them and ensure that they reached the real beneficiaries. Minister for Finance T.M. Thomas Isaac asked the officials to intensify mobilisation of funds through the national savings scheme.

Minister for Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran called for the removal of vagueness in the figures relating to farmers' suicides and steps for checking the conversion of paddy fields and ensuring that agricultural packages being implemented in the districts of Wayanad and Kasaragod reached the real beneficiaries.

Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma wanted joint action for the shifting of families from places affected by sea erosion.

Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan wanted local bodies to play a bigger role in tourism development.

Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran asked the Collectors to take concerted steps for issuing possession certificates to all landless tribal people.

Chief Secretary Lizzie Jacob attended the conference.
